In 1935, when Sarah and Robert Hill first saw their newborn baby girl, they had no hesitation in naming her Joy and so she was – and is.

Joy Hill grew up on the Upper Oldpark Road and attended Antrim Road Baptist Church school, her father was an officer in the RUC and as a family they worshipped at Oldpark Presbyterian, the church where she married Terry Jackson 64 years ago.

They eventually made a permanent move to Rosetta Road in South Belfast and for a good reason.

‘We thought it was the warmer side of town,’ this logical lady told me and there they found warmth and fellowship in Knockbreda Methodist Church, a vibrant congregation which suits the couple well as for Joy it’s important to be involved.

Anne Hailes talks to Dame Joy Jackson from St John Ambulance – the full interview is in this month’s edition.
