Portaferry Methodist.

A number of Methodist churches are opening their doors for European Heritage Open Days in September.

Portaferry, Portstewart and Carlisle Road will welcome visitors on September 10 and 11.

European Heritage Open Days is an annual event celebrating local architecture, history and culture.

It takes place across Europe on the second weekend in September.

In Northern Ireland European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) is run by the Department for Communities with the support of the Council of Europe and the European Commission.

Portaferry is now the oldest Methodist Church in Ireland still in regular use and visitors can enjoy seeing the interior as part of the event.

Portstewart Methodist Church is the oldest church in the town, built in memory of Dr Adam Clarke in the Gothic revivalist style.

Carlisle Road was also built in a Neo-Gothic Style with a delicate spire and flying buttresses. Internally the church is theatre-style with the organ behind the pulpit.

EHOD 2022 will take place on 10 and 11 September with week-long digital events taking place from 5-11 September.

It is a once-a-year opportunity for families, architect lovers and heritage enthusiasts to explore buildings and sites rarely open to the public.

A full list of participating venues is available online. Some are free while booking is essential for others.
