The experience of minorities, and hence their identity, is rarely uncomplicated; this is especially so of Protestantism (in its various expressions) in the Republic of Ireland. In the first in an occasional series of articles Dr Walsh presents a selection of stories describing experiences of, or relating to, the Protestant minority in the Republic. These have been gathered as part of a research project which has taken place over the last ten years. The material presented does not claim to represent a definitive or necessarily an overall objective reality, rather these are vignettes of personal experience. As a reader you may relate to some; others may be far from your understanding. A numberof the stories explore describe events which took place in a very different Ireland; nonetheless they are part of history and still potent for the tellers.
