Rev Karen Spence greets supporters.

The Newtownabbey community helped the Rev Karen Spence put her best feet forward on Tuesday (August 23) as she embarked on a sponsored walk around the circuit.

Karen, her sister Heather Patton and Stewart McDowell, walked between the five churches in the area in a bid to raise funds to help people who are struggling due to the rising cost of food and fuel. Other participants joined at various legs of the tour.

The date marks a year since Karen contacted her doctor after experiencing worrying symptoms and the GP ordered tests to be carried out. Despite a diagnosis of bowel cancer, Karen remained positive throughout her treatment. She then came up with the idea, during a restless night, of walking the 11.6 miles between Rathcoole, Whiteabbey, Monkstown, Mossley, Glengormley and Greencastle churches to raise funds and highlight the problem of food and fuel poverty.
